Mike Woltz, GLR  Retires April 1, 2009

Mike Woltz served as President and Shop Committeemen ofIAM Local Lodge 1045, helping establish District Lodge No. 201 in Algona, which was chartered August 1, 1977.  He served as Business Representative until February 1, 1979 when Mike was hired to the Grand Lodge as a Grand Lodge Representative in the Midwest Territory.
April 1, 2010 Mike was asked what he thought of ret
irement?

"Retirement is absolutely wonderful.  My pension and other retirement benefits are second to none.  I wish that every American worker could retire and live out their golden years with an excellent pension and
adequate health care coverage but that isn't the case.  So, we still have plenty of work to do in order to achieve the justice and dignity that the
American worker so richly deserves.  This will only be accomplished by collective bargaining.  Wake up American workers.  ORGANIZE!

"Thank You Brother Mike,
We Wish You, All The Best During The Next Chapter Of Your Life!"

IAM Member Tells Senate About Job Losses

Sitting before a Senate Democratic Policy Committee hearing, IAM District 6 President Jerry Nowadzky of Des Moines, Iowa, put a face to the many jobs that have been lost due to NAFTA and other trade agreements.
“Our local union lost 1,000 members,” Nowadzky told members of the panel. “All these people are in the same boat that I am in, it’s a pretty scary boat.” Jerry shared his personal story and the fears he has for his children who are entering the workforce.
“I think it’s time for all of us to take a serious, sober look at what this means to the future of our economy and our country. It requires the best of what all of us have to offer.” Committee Chairman Senator Dorgan (D-ND) thanked Mr. Nowadzky for putting a face on the growing problem. “I hope they do see that people are hurting, it’s not just me, it’s thousands across this country” added Nowadzky.

Iowa Machinist Joins Nationwide Jobs Tour
IAM District 6 President Jerry Nowadzky is among 51 American workers traveling by bus across eight states to put a human face on the nation’s soaring unemployment numbers. The workers, each with a story to tell, are part of the  “Show Us the Jobs”  tour,
organized by the AFL-CIO.At grim events held in the shadow of idled factories and shuttered shops, Nowadzky and his fellow bus riders talk bluntly about how joblessness has affected them, their families and their communities. “It feels like you’ve been kicked in the gut,” said Nowadzky, who was furloughed from successive jobs at Goss Graphics and Square D, when the companies shut down their facilities in Iowa and moved overseas. From the start of the tour in St. Louis, MO, the buses rolled north through Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota before turning east and stopping at cities in Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio. The tour is scheduled to arrive in Washington, DC on March 31 after events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. “It’s been a long week and a lot of miles,” said Nowadzky, who also helped organize the IAM’s week-long “Wall of Shame” tour honoring jobless workers in Iowa and Nebraska.Click http://www.showusthejobs.com for more information about the tour and to sign an online petition calling for an end to government policies that encourage companies to move US jobs overseas.

Iowa Machinist Featured on
 National News

Picture

Machinist Jerry Nowadzky, 49, of Montilcello, Iowa, is fast becoming a national icon representing American workers as he travels the country talking about the devastating effects outsourcing.

Nowadzky, President of IAM District 6, first came to national attention in January during the IAM “Wall of Shame” tour across Iowa, telling his story about being laid off from two different Machinist jobs. One job was outsourced to China and the other was sent to Mexico. He now works at a supermarket making half of what he used to make.

Nowadzky recently appeared on stage during the Democratic National Convention in Boston and was prominently featured in news stories during the AFL-CIO “Show Us the Jobs” bus tour. Earlier this week, Nowadzky could be seen on the CBS Evening News talking once again about the lack of good paying jobs and the difficulties still being faced by ordinary Americans trying to survive in the worst job market in decades.

Machinists at ammunition plant end strike
and ratify new contrac
t

September 27, 2005  The two hundred Machinists Union members working at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant near Burlington, IA ended their 9-day strike and ratified a new 4-year labor agreement recently.  The plant is operated by American Ordinance and our members make munitions for the military.
The contract deadline was extended until September 10, 2005 at which time our members of
IAM Local 1010 overwhelmingly rejected the company’s last, best and final offer. The main issues causing the strike were wages, increases in the employee portion of health insurance premiums and pension benefits.
Further negotiations lead to an agreement our members could ratify and they returned to work on
Wednesday, September 21, 2005.
IAM District 6 Business Representative Ed Miller proudly said, “Our members solidarity and professionalism on the picket line allowed the bargaining committee to negotiate a successful end to the strike.”
The new agreement includes $2.08 in wages increases over the term of the agreement.  The employee portion of insurance rates are frozen until December 31, 2006 and after that there are some modest increases.  Increases in the company pension apply to all service credit and will add 25 cents the first year.  Then on January 1, 2008 pension benefits will increase seventy-five cents and on January 1, 2009 pension benefits will increase by 1 dollar.
IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President James E. Brown praised BR Ed Miller and the Local 1010 bargaining committee saying, “We appreciate their hard work and dedication seeking the wages, benefits and working conditions our members at Local 1010 deserve.  We congratulate our members on their new contract and wish them continued success in the future.”
